Metcash has finally named a new group CEO, announcing former Tesco Express director Jeff Adams will lead the company, starting December this year.

In June the current CEO, Ian Morrice, revealed he would be stepping down after five years in the position.

In a statement to the ASX, Metcash said the two leaders of industry would work together from September onwards to ensure a smooth transition into the role for Mr Adams, and that Mr Morrice would also serve as an advisor to Mr Adams until the end of FY17.

Metcash chairman Rob Murray said the company undertook an extensive search, both internal and external, to locate the present CEO’s successor.

“We are delighted to have a person of Jeff’s caliber and experience join us,” he said.

“Jeff has a lifelong passion for the retail industry, and is ideally suited to lead the company’s continued focus on ensuring the competitiveness and success of independent retailers.

Mr Adams held a number of senior positions with Tesco over two decades of service, including CEO of Tesco in Turkey, Thailand, director of operations for Tesco Express UK, and retail operations director of Fresh & Easy in the US.

“I am deeply passionate about the independent retail sector and am honoured to be joining a company whose core purpose is building [its] success,” Mr Adams said.

“I look forward to using my experience to take our plans to the next level.”

Mr Adams said his family was involved in independent retailing, and that he understood the vital role of independents in local communities and the broader economy.
