Ansell donated an estimated 50,000 free condoms to Mardi Gras Fair Day attendees last Sunday, to help promote the importance of HIV protection among gay men.
A spokesperson for Ansell told C&I Week that the distribution of free condoms will not impact on sales at convenience stores, due to the high volume of products available across the country.
Research from the University of New South Wales found that over a quarter of gay men nationwide have had 10 or more sexual partners during the last six months.
The donation by Ansell was made in response to a “substantial shift in consistent condom use” among gay men as a HIV protection strategy.
According to their spokesperson, Ansell holds the belief that condoms are one of the most effective methods of preventing HIV.
It is the company’s goal to ensure that this belief is enforced among consumers.
This is not the first time Ansell has distributed free condoms, with similar schemes including free condoms for schoolies late last year in Surfers Paradise.
“This year alone, Ansell has donated 300,000 condoms to Family Panning Australia and sexual education programs in schools around the country,” the spokesperson said.
It was stated that Ansell was also looking to provide products to help protect women against HIV, but did not provide any further details to C&I Week.
