Caltex Traveston service centre sees thousands of visitors each year visit to get up close with a beloved piece of Australian sporting history.
Matilda, the iconic kangaroo from the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games, stands proudly at the centre, drawing visitors who remember her as the oversized mascot who delighted crowds by turning her head, winking, and even releasing joeys from her pouch.
Lorne Chambers, General Manager of Chevron Australia Downstream (Caltex), shared the company’s pride in preserving Matilda as a unique cultural landmark.
“Caltex is delighted to make Matilda accessible to the general public, and at thirteen metres tall and weighing six tons, she makes for a pretty unique landmark on the Bruce Highway.
“Visitors travelling north of the Sunshine Coast love the chance to enjoy our first-class facilities at Traveston and snap a holiday pic with Matilda.”
The Caltex Traveston site offers much more than just fuel; it’s a fully equipped stop for road-trippers and locals alike. Visitors can enjoy barista-made coffee, fresh food, and exclusive Caltex Rewards for loyal customers.
The service centre has 24 fuel hoses with Caltex with Techron fuel in every grade, full truck-stop amenities including en-suite bathrooms, a laundry, over 100 parking spaces, and family-friendly areas such as outdoor BBQs, kids’ play zones, and parent rooms. Traveston is also designed with the environment in mind, featuring solar power and its own wastewater treatment plant to minimise its impact.
Matilda is set to reach another milestone with her 50th birthday, which will coincide with the Brisbane Olympic Games in 2032, bringing renewed attention to this classic Australian icon.
