TasRecycle, a not-for-profit entity comprising beverage giants Asahi Beverages, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP), and Lion, has been appointed by the Tasmanian Government to oversee the state’s new container refund scheme, Recycle Rewards.
The initiative will bring Tasmania in line with the rest of Australia, with container refund schemes now set to operate in every state and territory.
TasRecycle will serve as the Scheme Coordinator, managing the scheme’s marketing, financial operations, and ensuring smooth execution. The scheme will provide Tasmanians with environmental, social, and financial benefits, offering 49 container refund points across the state for convenient access.
Ben Kearney, Chair of TasRecycle, congratulated the Tasmanian Government on its efforts.
“We look forward to supporting Tasmania’s environmental goals and the thousands of local community organisations, households, and businesses who will benefit from the introduction of a successful container refund scheme.”
Consumers will be able to receive a ten-cent refund for each eligible container returned, incentivising recycling and reducing waste in landfill. This mirrors similar schemes already running in other Australian states, where 60 per cent of post-consumer plastic is recycled through container refund schemes, compared to a national average of 18 per cent.
Orlando Rodriguez, Managing Director of Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Australia, highlighted the importance of such schemes in Australia’s recycling efforts.
“CCEP is determined to be a leader in Australia’s circular economy. Container refund schemes play a critical role in reducing waste going to landfill… Together with our partners, we look forward to working closely with the Tasmanian Government to ensure the Scheme is a success.”
The launch of Recycle Rewards will also support Tasmania’s local recycling infrastructure, contributing to a more sustainable and circular economy for packaging.
Tasmania’s Recycle Rewards scheme is expected to play a pivotal role in reducing waste, improving recycling rates, and fostering a circular economy for packaging materials.
