Coles and Woolworths intend to defend the class action proceedings commenced by a law firm over misleading promotional pricing practices.
Gerard Malouf and Partners last week launched a class action lawsuit against the two supermarkets for allegedly misleading consumers through discount pricing claims on hundreds of common supermarket products.
The firm said that an average customer could be eligible for a refund ranging between $200 and $1300 depending on their shopping habits and purchases at the retailers.
“We believe this class action is an essential move toward safeguarding consumer rights and demanding transparency in retail practices Australia-wide,” said Gerard Malouf, the law firm’s chairman.
The lawsuit centres on the Australian Competition and Consumers Commission’s (ACCC) allegations of misleading conduct by the supermarkets in advertising discounts on 245 various supermarket products, which has potentially led to financial losses for consumers.
Coles and Woolworths both released statements expressing their intent to defend the proceedings.
