Costco has revealed that around 40,000 customers were overcharged for fuel purchases on the 2nd of January.
Australian Payments Plus (AP+) identified an issue with eftpos payments where payment reversals were rejected, resulting in consumers not receiving funds for charges that had been reversed.
Costco customer Nikky told Heidi Murphy on 3AW Drive that her husband filled up his ute and saw that they had been charged double for his fuel purchase.
“If I hadn’t of seen and looked in my bank, then I wouldn’t have known. How many customers out there don’t know they’ve been double charged?”
Nikky was told by her bank that it could take 30 to 60 days to fix the situation.
AP+ has said that a solution was identified and put in place on 3 January and payment reversals and pre-authorisations are now operating as normal and that the impacted transactions will be manually reversed.
“We apologise without reservation to Costco Fuel customers and everyone who was impacted by this temporary glitch. The issue has been fixed and we are working closely with financial institutions to reverse the impacted payments as quickly as possible,” said a spokesperson for AP+.
Impacted consumers have been told to contact their banks directly.
