Deadly violence against retail workers in the Northern Territory

The Northern Territory has suffered two violent attacks against retail workers in less than a week, one of which has tragically resulted in the death of a local store owner.

The Northern Territory Police Force is investigating after a death in Nightcliff on 23 April. Around 5:15pm, it is alleged that an unknown male was stealing items from a supermarket on Progress Drive, Nightcliff. Linford Feik, the 71-year-old store owner, allegedly confronted the male and asked him to return the items before the male allegedly stabbed him with an edged weapon and fled the scene on a bicycle.

Patrons inside the shop provided initial first aid and immediately contacted police. Emergency services responded immediately and attended the scene where CPR was commenced, but sadly, the 71-year-old man was pronounced deceased.

Following an investigation, Northern Territory Police have charged an 18-year-old male, Phillip Randel Maurice Parry, with murder. Parry faced court on 28 April, where he was remanded in custody, with his matter due to face court for a preliminary hearing on 25 June.

MGA Independent Businesses Australia, the peak body representing independent grocers, issued a statement expressing their sorrow.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and community touched by this heartbreaking incident.

“As the peak body representing independent grocers, we recognise the vital role that individuals like Linford Feik play in our communities. These local businesses are not just places to shop; they are the heart of our neighbourhoods, fostering connections and providing essential services.

“The safety of our members and the communities they serve is of paramount importance. We stand in solidarity with our fellow grocers during this difficult time and urge the community to come together to support one another.

“This tragedy highlights the ongoing challenges faced by retailers, and we must continue to have conversations about safety and the well-being of those who serve us daily. We are committed to advocating for initiatives that protect independent retailers and ensure a safer environment for both business owners, staff and their customers.”

In a separate incident on 27 April, police were called to a service station in Sadadeen, Alice Springs, following an aggravated robbery. At 10:51am, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received a report that a male staff member had been stabbed after confronting two males attempting to steal items from the store.

Earlier, around 10:40am, the 26-year-old worker noticed two males trying to steal goods. When they left the store with the items, he approached them and asked for the items to be returned.

The offenders, captured on CCTV, then pushed the victim to the ground. While standing over him, one offender punched the victim once to the head. While the victim was still on the ground, the other offender lunged at him with an edged weapon, stabbing him once to the forearm.

Both offenders then walked from the location and remain outstanding. St John Ambulance and Police were called immediately after the offenders had left. The victim’s injuries are not life-threatening.
