On 10 September, SPAR International (SPAR) and PT. Ramayana Lestari Sentosa Tbk (Ramayana) announced a new partnership agreement which will see over 30 new SPAR supermarkets opened across Indonesia within the next three years.
SPAR International is the world’s largest food voluntary retail chain with over 12,000 stores worldwide and global retail sales of €32.2 billion in 2013. The partnership with Ramayana represents a further development in the growth of SPAR in Asia.
The Ramayana retail group has 118 stores trading under the Ramayana, Robinson and Cahaya retail brand names within Indonesia. Ramayana has ambitious plans to grow its food retail business and the agreement with SPAR also will see Ramayana rebrand its existing stores to SPAR.
The partnership marks a further significant expansion of SPAR in Asia following the recent successful re-establishment of its presence in India and the continued strong growth of its existing operations in China where SPAR International now has over 250 large format stores with retail sales in excess of €1.6 billion.
Announcing the new partnership, Tobias Wasmuht, International Retail Director, SPAR International said “Our new partnership with Ramayana in Indonesia is consistent with SPAR International’s strategic focus on partnering with leading local and regional chains in growth markets in Asia. Together we unite the best of SPAR’s global retail expertise and Ramayana’s extensive and longstanding understanding of the Indonesian customer. Ramayana has a proven record of success and a strong entrepreneurial culture and represent a great strategic partner for SPAR International. We look forward to working in close partnership with the company to accelerate the growth of their food retail business through our unique multi-format strategy and our ongoing focus on freshness, choice, value and service.”
Mr Agus Makmur, President, Ramayana, said “We are delighted to be partnering with SPAR International in the future development of our food retail business in Indonesia. The SPAR brand has proven its success around the world and we believe it will be very well received by consumers throughout Indonesia. Our ambition is that all our stores operate to the best international standards in terms of food quality and service and our new partnership with SPAR International will ensure that we achieve this, while delivering a great shopping experience to our customers.”
